Kiss of Love

Poem by Leena Manimekalai

Translation : Ravi Shankar

While kissing Kamala Das’s dense hair
Untangling each strand
Kerala police arrested us both and
Threw us in the van
There we found Sappho, Avvayar
Andal, Sylvia Plath and Frida
Already handcuffed and dumped
Growing weary of our kissing orgy
The police called the army
We fired missiles of poems
All their weapons failed before them
State of Emergency was declared
Locking up `language' under high security
Poor morons of power did not know
That kisses have no Language
